Kupka’s Piano tackles the pinnacle work of the French spectralist canon, Gerard Grisey’s monumental sextet Vortex Temporum. Taking a swirling figure from Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloé, Vortex pushes it to its limits, to its self-destruction, and then to its resurrection. To compliment the 40-minute masterpiece, the concert commences with Kupka percussionist Angus Wilson’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s popular yet elusive solo work, Zyklus.

Presented by the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts, The Human Detained is a boundless collaboration between ensemble-in-residence Kupka's Piano and Makeshift Dance Collective. The 60-minute production features four world premieres of substantial new works by Brisbane composers Steve Newcomb, Michael Mathieson-Sandars, Samantha Wolf and Brodie McAllister.

Future Retro brings together gargantuan compositions from our past (Concert 2: Retro) with five exciting new commissions (Concert 1: Future). It’s a joyous celebration of where we’ve come from, and where we’re headed.

The NOW ensemble brings together a group of fearless professional flautists across Australia who are champions of contemporary music and devoted to pushing the boundaries of performance.
