Gait Rhythm in Unit 3

for one performer

Gait Rhythm in Unit 3 (2020) is an original work that explores the actual and absurd sounds from my domestic environment through the imagined perspective of my downstairs neighbours. In this improvisatory work I interact with vacuum cleaners, yoga mats, wooden shoes, and squeaky dog toys as they sound through their intended functionalities. Other objects help to recreate sounds from my home in an absurd way outside of their common purpose. Bubble wrap becomes the pop of frying oil; a skateboard represents objects that may glide across my wooden floors; and a children’s bowling set mimics the crash of accidentally dropped items. In this work, the function and context of objects are both preserved and subverted to recreate the sounds of my domestic environment on a stage.

Gait Rhythm in Unit 3 (2020) was premiered on 19 February 2020 by the composer at the Seven Hills Theatre in Brisbane as part of the Kin-Makers series, with video and audio documentation by Tangible Media.
